UNDP and the University of Balochistan (UoB) signed an MOU to bolster youth empowerment & human development to achieve Agenda 2030On September 1st, 2021, UNDP Pakistan and the University of Balochistan (UoB) signed an MOU to collaborate on bolstering youth empowerment and human development to achieve Agenda 2030 in the province. The MoU was signed by UNDP Pakistan Resident Representative Mr Knut Ostby and Vice-Chancellor, University of Balochistan, Dr Shafiq-Ur-Rehman. Mr Zulfiqar Durrani, Head of Office at the UNDP Quetta Sub-Office was also present, as were fellows of the UNDP-UoB Government Innovation Lab. As per the MoU, UoB and UNDP will work towards accelerating the progress of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Balochistan, through activities including research and advocacy, promoting SDGs related dialogue and awareness sessions, and mentoring and fellowship support to UoB students.Speaking at the occasion, UNDP Resident Representative Mr Knut Ostby said, “According to UNDP’s Pakistan National Human Development Report 2020 on Inequality, since 1999-2000, Balochistan has experienced a 7 per cent decrease in its real per capita income. The province also has the lowest Human Development Index value out of all four provinces”. He emphasized the resulting need to find innovative and sustainable solutions to address development challenges in order to achieve the SDGs in Balochistan. The Resident Representative also highlighted UNDP’s own work on youth empowerment and the blue economy in Balochistan, and thanked the Government of Balochistan for its firm belief in innovation that had enabled the Government Innovation Lab to deliver robust results on service delivery and innovation.Director ORIC and Lead GIL Dr Waheed Noor informed the delegates of a number of interventions GIL, UoB has taken to support government line departments. He added that GIL has also developed smart IoT and AI-based solutions for the Environment department and PHED. PHED.
